CONTACTING A COLLEGE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Using the Detailed Search

Using the detailed search will limit your results to those courses and colleges that best fit your criteria. If you find that you are getting no results from a search try again removing one of the fields, for example, the 'keyword' field or, if you have searched using a town name, replace this with a region to broaden the chances of a match for your search.

Using the keyword Search

Using the keyword search gives you matches for any words in the database that are like the word you have used. For example if you put in the word 'Cambridge' the search will return results which may be for colleges in Cambridge, or where mention is made of the Cambridge Examinations or where the college says that it has a link with Cambridge University. If you find that the results are too broad either use the detailed search or input a more precise keyword.

Locating a College on a map of britain

The website has a map on the home page which provides a regional indication of where colleges are located. Each college record also has a link to detailed map where you will be able to zoom in or out to get an exact location for the college.

Contacting a college

All college records have a link that opens an email enquiry pad from which you can send enquiries directly to the college. Their email addresses are also published and you can print the pages to keep a record of the college for later reference. You can also go straight from a record on this website to the college website through links provided on the college details pages.

Your qualifications and college entry requirements

You may have qualifications that your selected college recognises. Many colleges use the NARIC (National Academic Recognition and Information Centre) to determine whether or not a qualification is academically equivalent to the British requirements for course entry.

Colleges will usually consider each application individually so it is always best to contact the college of your choice directly with questions about your eligibility.

'A Level' and 'GCSE'

GCSEs

GCSEs are the main examinations taken by students in Britain to complete the first stage of secondary or high school education. After completing GCSE courses successfully, students are able to progress to A-level or other equivalent college studies.

Subjects

There is a wide range of GCSE subjects to choose from. Some subjects at this level are compulsory and others optional. Check with the colleges listed for more information.

A Level (Advanced Level)

A levels are studied typically between the ages of 16 - 18 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, although mature students are also encouraged to study A Levels. They remain the most popular route into British higher education institutions.

Subjects

There is a broad range of A levels for you to choose from, including Business, Science, Arts and Humanities subjects. Different colleges will offer different subjects - check with the colleges of your choice.

Each A Level consists of 6 units which are studied in two stages:

  1. Stage 1 – Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level: You study 3 modules and upon completion you will be awarded an AS Level.
  2. Stage 2 – A2 level: You study the second set of 3 units which will upgrade AS level to a full A Level.

What are the different types of accommodation?

  1. Homestay : you live with a British family in their home. Usually you are able to select homes and families that suit certain criteria (e.g. smokers or non-smokers, with pets or without pets)
  2. Residence : usually a hall of residence run by the college and on or nearby the college campus
  3. Hostel : usually independent of the college, privately run or run by an organisation and offering student accommodation with different levels of comfort and privacy.
