St Clare's is a co-educational, day and boarding sixth form college located in the elegant residential area of North Oxford. St Clare's is unique. It offers students from all over the world the opportunity to pursue a first-class education in Oxford, one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in the UK. St Clare's has a worldwide reputation as experts in providing the International Baccalaureate Diploma and preparatory Pre-IB course. Only 13 other schools or colleges in the world have been teaching the IB longer than St. Clare's.
Based on the Government Performance Tables published in January each year, for the 5th year St. Clare's has the best sixth form results in Oxfordshire and has the 10th best sixth form results amongst all 4,303 state and independent schools included in the tables in England. In May 2014, 121 students took the International Baccalaureate Diploma resulting in an average points score of 36 out of 45 points; the average worldwide points score for all schools and colleges is less than 30 points. Four students were awarded the maximum 45 points something less than 0.2% of the student body achieve worldwide.
Students taking the two-year IB Diploma choose six academic subjects including modern languages, science, mathematics and humanities. They also complete a research project, follow a course in critical thinking and take part in extra-curricular activities. The final mark is an average of performance in each subject. The IB is a challenging but extremely attractive alternative to A levels.
In 2009 an Ofsted inspection awarded the College “Outstanding” the highest rating for the quality of its boarding, something that fewer than 10% of boarding schools achieve in the UK.
We put our success down to a combination of factors - small class sizes, students who are serious about their work, the stimulating experience provided by the IB curriculum, excellent teachers and a supportive environment where young adults are able to flourish. The atmosphere is informal and friendly, encouraging personal responsibility and international friendships. Over 40 different nationalities are represented of which about 15 % are from Britain. Our students live in comfortable college houses under the care of a resident warden and all meals are served in the college dining room.
We have a an excellent Activities Department offering a great range of sports, such as football, tennis, running and golf; educational trips to London museums, ancient historical sites and theatre performances; weekend outdoor adventure trips, such as canoeing, climbing and hill walking; as well as conservation work as part of the IB Diploma service requirement. Take a look at our picture galleries showing some of the activities our students experience throughout the year.
We have two Open Days a year although visitors are welcome any time. Each year we offer a number of Scholarships and Bursaries. Shortlisted candidates must attend Scholarship Day in February.
